Buying liquor or wine when you fly into Stockholm?

We are flying into Stockholm for a Viking Cruise. We will be connecting from the U S via Amsterdam. Is there a duty free stop in the airport where we can buy wine and liquor at a better price than at the state run liquor store? We want to pick up some Tanqueray.

Are you checking luggage? If so, I would buy it at home and check it. If not, I would try to buy in Amsterdam. I don’t recall seeing anything in Stockholm and you definitely don’t want to buy it if you have to buy it outside the airport.

I’m pretty sure that you could buy this in Amsterdam and carry onto the plane to Stockholm when we did that route but it’s been a few years so hopefully somebody who’s flown it more recently will jump in

I just did a quick Internet search and you cannot do duty-free on arrival in Stockholm if you are coming from another EU country which you would be coming from Amsterdam so if you can’t buy an Amsterdam, you may have a problem.

You cannot buy duty-free on arrival at Stockholm Arlanda. You could buy at the tax-free shop at Amsterdam Schiphol. It will be cheaper there than buying from Sweden’s Systembolaget (state-run liquor store).

For comparison:

A 700ml bottle of Tanqueray at Sweden’s Systembolaget is currently 299 SEK (about 31 USD)

A 1 litre bottle is currently 25.90 EUR (about 30 USD) at AMS

Here is the info about tax-free shopping at Schiphol. It seems the retailers are compensating for the tax for intra EU purchases.

Are you planning on bringing the alcohol on the ship? If so, you'd better check with Viking to see if it is allowed. Many cruise lines don't allow passengers to bring alcohol on board. (They want to sell it to you.)

Viking Cruise does allow pax to bring beer, wine, and spirits on board, unlike most of the mass market lines.

Thanks for the information. Viking did allow us to bring on wine when we were on a Greek cruise. Which was nice. We are traveling with another couple who are debating whether or not to get the drinks package. They are the liquor drinkers. I wondered about duty free in Stockholm. I went into Oslo one time and the duty free was at arrivals and a lot of people on the plane made a bee line for it. I wondered if the same was true in Stockholm. Apparently not. I think we will survive. We are staying at the Queens Hotel, which was in the RS guidebook. Should be a nice trip. Any further comments are welcome!

There is no duty free on arrival in Stockholm. But there is a Systembolaget in Hötorgshallen and one close to Sergels torg, in Åhléns basement, so they are hard to miss if you're staying in Stockholm.

Thanks for the advice. We ended up buying two bottles of wine at the state store in the Hotorgshallen Market. Which is a great place, The two bottles were about $25. We were on a food tour, which was very good, so I had only a couple of minutes. Asked the person at the counter if they had a Portuguese white wine and we were done. These stores are closed on Sunday and after 3 on Saturday. It was a simple solution (although I did bring two better bottles of wine from home.)

Purchase at US departure city Duty Free shop, so long as you don't exit "TSA" area in Schiphol and get the bag sealed in the US as a TRANSIT passenger, The duty free shop bag is allowed IN ADDITION to whatever carry on allowances you have
