Best way to get from Stockholm's Arlanda airport to downtown Stockholm

Hi all,

I'm flying into Stockholm's Arlanda (ARN) airport April 22, 2026, and need to travel into downtown Stockholm city center. I'm looking for advice on best way(s) to do this.

Thank you a lot!

There is an express bus we used last December, that runs all the way. I think a train runs as well, but I have no experience with that…

The train being referred to is the Arlanda Express. Less than 20 minutes from airport to main train station.

I've taken it a few times. Not the cheapest way but definitely comfortable and quick.

It's cheaper to buy the tickets before you board the train.

Thank both of you! The express train does sound nice, but is a little pricey.

I wasn't aware of an 'express bus'. That sounds very interesting, and I will look into it.

Thanks again! Virginia

We took the Arlanda Express a few weeks ago. Well worth it.

You can also take the normal suburban train. A bit slower, but cheaper.

What the best solution is depends on your personal preferences (for example, I will never take a bus where there is a train) and where in Stockholm you have to be....

I always take the airport bus - comfortable, reliable, good prices (if going to Stockholm CityTerminal at the main train station you now also get a group discount for 2 or more people). There are a couple of routes depending where exactly you need to go and travel time is comparable to commuter train. Plenty of room for luggage.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for letting me know that the Arlanda Express is worth the extra $$.

Hi WengenK,

Thanks for the information about the normal suburban train. I would rather take a train than a bus whenever it makes sense. We are staying in the Ostermalm neighbourhood at Storgatan 6, close to the Ostermalmstorg square and the city centre.

I will check out the link you provided to try to see how a normal suburban train might work for us.

Hi hopper18,

It's good to hear that the airport bus is comfortable and reliable. We are staying in the Ostermalm neighbourhood at Storgatan 6, close to the Ostermalmstorg square and the city centre. Is it true that the Stockholm City Terminal is mainly for buses and the Central Station is mainly for trains? Also, from my reading it sounds like the Terminal and Central Station are connected to one another. Are my understandings correct?

Thanks for the link to the information about the airport bus.

Regards,
Virginia

The station complex is four stations that are connected:

  • Stockholm city for commuter trains
  • Stockholm C or Stockholms centralstation for other trains
  • Cityterminalen for coach buses
  • T-Centralen for metro

Then there are city bus stops and a tram stop too.

In general the signs on the entrances use one of the four names but inside the complex the signs state type of transport.

Yes, the bus station (City Terminal) is attached to the Stockholm Central train station and the subway/tram/local bus network. So you could transfer there to the subway to reach Östermalmstorg. This overview might help you visualize it https://www.flygbussarna.se/en/stockholm-cityterminal Just follow the signs for the subway aka Tunnelbana (“T” logo is very similar to Boston if you have ever used the subway there!) You will do the same if you arrive by train into the central station.
The bus is cheapest and can also be more convenient if you are staying near one of the in-town stops, thus avoiding a subway transfer with luggage. Based on your final destination, the commuter train to subway option probably makes most sense though, unless you are really on a tight budget.

Just fyi, the Flyggbussarna tickets are cheaper if you buy them ahead of time online. Otherwise there is a ticket machine at the airport bus stop.
