When we went to Stockholm many years ago, we did a day trip to Vaxholm which was perhaps my favourite part of the whole trip. Not only is the island a beautiful and peaceful place to explore, the ferry ride there thru the Stockholm Archipelago was an experience in itself. There are lots of other islands in the archipelago but Vaxholm is one of the easiest/fastest to get to if you want to go there and back in a day- I would recommend looking into where you can get on the ferry.
