Hi, solo traveler, using public transit. Part of my March trip to Sweden is to fly into Kiruna (overnight train back) and spend 4 nights in Abisko.
Daytime activities are booked for some days (dog slide driving, snowshoes, etc) but I also would like to venture a bit further one day
There are tours to the Ice Hotel - unique but seems touristy. Another option is to take just go on my own on the train to Narvik and return the same day. Is that doable? I hear the train is great but is Narvik worth seeing? Other ideas?
The Ice Hotel is a bit touristy, but that doesn't mean it's not worth visiting. It is an interesting place in my opinion and a very impressive building. Very easy to visit on your own from Kiruna, there are regular buses that stop outside the Ice Hotel, so if you make it 1 night in Kiruna and 3 nights in Abisko, a visit to the Ice Hotel is easy.
Taking the train to Narvik and back is also a good idea. Narvik itself is not that interesting in my opinion, but the views from the train are great.
Thank you. I think Narvik might be a nice lazy day in between the active outdoors. Any recommendations for what to do there or where to eat?
The problem is that at the moment the rail line between Abisko and Narvik is closed due to a derailment, and the trains are replaced by buses.
