We will be traveling in July; flying into Copenhagen and out of Stockholm. So we are thinking 2 nights in Copenhagen and 2 nights in Stockholm. This would leave us with 4 unplanned nights.
We are planning on renting a car in Sweden. We enjoy exploring historical sites, being by the water, eating local cuisine, etc.
Should we stay longer than 2 nights in Stockholm? Some other towns that have come up in my research: Malmo, Gothenburg, Visby, Molle, Kalmar, Vaxjo, Rattvik, and Uppsala. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I think 2 nights is not enough for either Copenhagen or Stockholm. I'd suggest a minimum of 3 nights each, though there is enough to keep you on the go if you had 4 nights each. You could use the extra time to visit some of the places that are easily accessible as day trips. Uppsala is a nice easy day trip from Stockholm, and there are many choices for day trips from Copenhagen, including Roskilde, Helsingør, the Louisiana Museum, and Dragor.
If you are willing to consider just spending your nights in these two cities and exploring the surroundings by taking day trips, you would have no need for a car. In fact, a car would be a pain in the cities.
If you are committed to the schedule you are proposing, I would still recommend dropping the car when you arrive in Stockholm. You won't need it while you're there. Of the places you listed, I can only comment on Kalmar, where I stayed for two nights. You should then drive across the nearby bridge to Öland and explore the island. And allow yourselves some time to enjoy exploring Kalmar as well. There's a beautiful castle there.
Where did you stay in Kalmar?
