After flying from LAX, we have a 5 hour layover in Stockholm and would like to get out of the airport for a bit. Any recommendations on what to do? We realize that it will be about an hour commute each way into town and were hoping that there was something closer to airport to experience and do. Any ideas are much appreciated.
The Arlanda Express only takes 20 minutes to get to downtown Stockholm. Provided your flight isn't late, you could conceivably explore the city a little.
Consider taking the express train ("pricey") to Stockholm. Exit the train station at the upper level, walk east to Hamngatan and take the tram to Djurgarden. Return on the tram to Kungsträdgarden, walk through the park to the south, across the bridge to Gamla Stan, meander clockwise through the area returning to the Central Station from the south, and take the express train back to the airport. RS Stockholm book has a suggested walk through Gamla Stan. Wear comfortable shoes, much of the route through Gamla Stan is on cobblestone paving. If you have a long wait on the tram, forego the tram ride and walk east a short distance to Kungsträdgarden stroll through the park and across the bridge to Gamla Stan.
