Zaragoza Spain anyone?

My husband and I are doing the Basque tour in 2025 end of sept/beginning of Oct. For an after tour trip we are thinking of taking staying in Bilbao the tour over night to see the city a little more.

Then take a train to Zaragoza (4/5 hrs) for a couple days and then on to Barcelona (1.5 hrs) and stay for a couple days.

Then train to Madrid FOR A COUPLE days. Then fly home.

  1. Has anyone been to Zaragoza and have any comments. I only picked it because the train line goes through the mountains on the way to Barcelona and it looked like an interesting place.

  2. I'm assuming spending an extra day in Bilbao will find plenty to do there but any advice would be welcome.

  3. Any comments / advice for a couple days in Barcelona and Madrid welcome too. We will be using an RS guide for those 2 locations.

3 days there.
Liked it a lot.
Origami Museum is great.
Firefighters’ Museum is very good.
Most people love the big church.
Food in Del Tubo is very good.

We were there in a mid-September a few years ago. We only were there one night, a stop to break up an otherwise long travel day.

We enjoyed it, have talked about going back. We only walked the town, visited the Cathedral; but it looked like there were a number of other sights, plus a decent array of restaurants.

A very nice city with plenty to keep you well entertained for a couple days. A vibrant tapas scene, nice central market, Roman ruins. Interesting architecture both modernistsa and mudejar. All very walkable with a sizeable pedestrian quarter. Brad

Agree about Zaragoza.

Two days is short for Barcelona if it's your first visit; there are 6 very popular sights for which you'd need to purchase timed tickets in advance, which makes it difficult to be an efficient sightseer.

Two days is also short for Madrid if you're interested in its art museums.

We were there in Nov a couple of years ago. The entire church complex is huge and very interesting. The Christmas decorations were set up but not lit. Very beautiful. The view from the church tower was fantastic. The city had lots of very inviting tree lined plaza areas very nice. We were only on a day trip from Barcelona and met a local guide to take a walking tour I would go back.

I agree with the positive comments, above, on Zaragoza. My visit was in Nov. 2009, so my recollections obviously are not up-to-date, but I recall liking the city a lot, and thinking that it was a great place to visit.

I’ve only ever stayed there as a stopover en route to Santander. It seems to an interesting city, really hot in the summer though.

I was just in Zaragoza last month for 3 nights. Oct. weather was nice and we walked everywhere. The only time we took a taxi was from the train station to our hotel.

Our favorite site was the Palacio de la Aljaferia. We arrived when they first opened and practically had the place to ourselves. Also, enjoyed walking in the old town in the evening when the Cathedral and bridge are lit up. If you have extra time, the Oragami Museum - EMOZ and the Firefighter's museum are fun to visit. We didn't make it to the Roman ruins.

Great tapas in the El Tubo district and delicious Chocolate con churros at Lalmolda.

Zaragoza is especially nice because it is a real working city and not overrun by tourists.
