There isn’t a lot to see there, but we enjoyed the main market and walking down to the English Cable. Its Alcázar was very large and we spent a couple hours visiting it.
A vehicle would work best for visiting the following places.
It you’re a fan of the old spaghetti westerns, a number were filmed about 15 miles north of Almería, by MiniHollywood Oasys, Fort Bravo/Texas Hollywood, Western Leone. Also in that area is the Tabernas Desert, Europes only desert. Scenes from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly were filmed there and at locations throughout that area.
Thirty miles away is Parque Natrual Cabo de Gata and Playa de Mónsul. The beach has also been used as a filming location, e.g., in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
There are lots of places I'd visit in Andalucia before choosing Almeria.
Yes, the Alcazar and the desert are interesting but it isn't my favourite place in Andalucia.

Have you thought about Cadiz-Jerez-Arcos, or Malaga itself makes a good base.
What time of year and for how long?
Thanks for the replies
We too have spent lots of different times in Andalucia .
This is why we are looking for places we haven't been to yet.
I have changed things due to your posts.
I am now thinking on seeing Cadiz and Jerez, that way we can re visit Seville as well for a day on our way there by train from Malaga.
I wonder whether you've been to Ubeda, Baeza and Jaen. They're very different from the traditional destinationsmin Andalucia. Not close to the coast, so not suitable if you're seeking a beach destination.
I see some pretty bold claims up there, but I’d take them with a pinch of salt…
Sure, everyone’s got their own travel style and rhythm, but honestly, out of the hundreds of places I’ve visited over the years all over the world, I can hardly think of anywhere that truly had “nothing” or was “not worth it.” Some I liked more than others, of course, but all of them had something to offer. And Almería is definitely no exception.
Anyway, I’m sure you’ve already done your homework, but just in case:
