Yikes ... Madrid Hotel Prices in Early October - Need reasonable recommendations

Prices for hotels in Central Madrid are running about twice what they normally run. We are talking $350 for a room that typically goes about $150. This appears to be happening only around Oct 1 though Oct 5.

What's going... massive conventions or something?

Recommendations for reasonably priced places to stay that are somewhat nice? Upon arrival, I really do use my room more often than later in the trip to rest, recover from a very very long flight, and re-orient myself. So, a nice room is important to me at that point in the trip. I just turned a young 60 ... but well past hostels and bad hotels.

Advice?

The Hotel Europa has always been our go to hotel in central Madrid with very reasonable prices. Did you price it? I will go look. We recently did some US travel and are finding nearly everything about 25% higher with airline tickets doubled.

PS -- Wow You are correct. Something must be happening in that time frame. Hotel Europa was $405/night.

Thanks. --- Just looked. They have the same Oct 3 and Oct 4 oddity .... both nights are priced at $439 per night. There must be something very big happening in Madrid over those days because prices on both sides of them drop significantly.

I used booking.com to search. Hotel Sancho, near Atocha station, came in at $718 for your 4 nights, for a single room with ensuite bath. That is a non-refundable rate. To book on their own website, you have to send a request.

What you might do is go to booking.com, put in a hotel (could be that one or another) and your dates, and then use the map function to find other possibilities. Hotels with rooms available on your dates will be pinned on the map, showing the price. You can open each of those to see the hotel name and details.

When you find one you like, you can book right there on booking.com, or go to the hotel’s own website.

If you use booking.com, check for apartments. They're sometimes less costly than hotels or B&Bs.

My brother is part owner in a nut company and there is a World Sustainability Symposium occurring at that time. He’s attending on behalf of the U.S Department of Commerce.

Back in 2019 we were in Madrid when there was a huge world medical conference taking place and prices were equally high then.

There are no less than three other conferences occurring that same week.

Hotel Evenia Alcala is a highly-rated (8.6) local hotel that has rooms October 1-5 for less than $90 per night.
The chain hotels are mostly sold out, but I see a lot of other options in independent hotels in good locations for less than $150 on www.Trivago.com

Interestingly, I ran into the same issue that weekend in Barcelona. Fewer options and much higher prices. Ended up shifting our days there.

I guess I could have added that after Madrid, there’s another conference in Barcelona. My brother’s going to that one too. There are multiple conferences taking place in Barcelona. You can look the up online.

Hey all. Thanks for your suggestions. Rather than re-arrange flights and such, I'm going to bite the bullet for a couple of days and fork over the extra money. I've gotten the extra expense down to just two nights ... and was able to get pretty good rates for the rest of the time there.

I'm staying at "only you hotel Atocha" Oct 2nd and 3rd, then on the 4th, driving South. Coming back to same hotel from 9th to 12th of oct. I booked through priceline. The rooms were really pricey (between $500 to $700 per night through booking.com and through the hotel itself). Priceline did me a deal for 5 days which averaged $315 per night! It's still more than I wanted to pay, but much cheaper that way. It's a 4 star hotel and walking distance to everything I wanted to see.
