anyone tour rioja area and visited wineries open for tastings without reservation? also best town to stay 2 nights close to wineries so not to drive too far back to hotel. Going late April
Thanks Dave! Are the wineries you mentioned open freely or is reservation needed. I really appreciate your help
Be careful with the amount of wine you consume if you are driving. DUI laws in Europe are generally stricter than in the USA.
Try visiting Spain Fascinante. It gives some suggestions on wine routes and locations.
When we stayed in Olite there were two wineries right in town (Bodegas Vega del Castillo, Cosechero Reunidos CoOp) and a couple others nearby. We just went to the two in town. A couple places with bodegas we passed through last year were Haro and Elciego.
I would visit at least one or two wineries with centuries-old cellars, if you only do the tasting you´ll miss a very, very important part of history and knowledge of the peculiar way of making wine at Rioja. Do not do it the Napa Valley way, I believe it´s much better to do it the local way.
The highlight of our two week trip to Barcelona-Basque country-Barcelona in September, 2019 was a tour plus lunch at Bodegas Baigorri near La Guardia. The architecture is beautiful, the views gorgeous, staff welcoming…and the wine + food were amazing!
