Wine tasting in Rioja and Ribera del Duero

Hi all! The hubby and I are headed to Spain in early September to do some wine tasting and eating fun. We're targeting Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions for this trip. Any winery/bodega recommendations? Does anyone have any experience with any tour companies? We plan to do some on our own in a rental car, but we like to use a tour company occasionally to pick the minds of the guides and other visitors. Thanks for any input!

Hi Diane, September is the harvest month here in La Rioja. In Logroño from the 20th to the 26th it is San Mateos, the wine harvest festival.
The regional government and the regulatory board for Rioja do a good job of planning activities during the whole year. One program they have is called Wine and the Five Senses. September and October are the months of Hearing. The list of activities should come out in July. One of the things that they do is concerts in wineries. For 25 euros they take you from the center of Logroño to a winery. Generally there is a wine tasting, some snacks and a concert. And of course they bring you back so no driving worries. It is quite popular. Several years ago, in the year of Astronomy, they had wine tasting and star gazing with an astronomer. Sold out like hotcakes. They also have a wine train that takes you from Logroño to Haro. There are several wineries next to the station and you have time to visit them before coming back.

If you have a car, you must go to the wine museum at Vivancos

@dlindstrom: Thanks so much for posting this information and the links. We will be in Logrono for the festival and now will plan on attending at least one concert. Wine and music - what could be better?
