Hi Patty,

Some good day trips from Jerez are Arcos de la Fronterra and Cadiz, both about a half-hour away, as well as Sevilla, which is about an hour away. Gibraltar is about an hour and a half away and while you can take ferries to Tangier, Morocco from there, those ferries go to the Tangier MED port, which is 25 miles from the city center. it's better to go to Tarifa and take a ferry from there, which is a shorter trip and takes you directly to the old town. Although you can do this as a day trip from Jerez, it will be a long day - about 3.5 hours each way including the ferry ride. As for Portugal, I suggest Tavira, which is about a 2.5 hour drive each way.

Are you on a business trip Patty? I would prefer to stay in Seville, if I did not have business to do, or in Carmona, if on a honeymoon. You did not say if you have a car, which is a big factor. When we were in Ronda (another romantic and attractive city, unlike Jerez) we found the drive to Gibraltar tedious and slow, and the destination disappointing. But it's a matter of taste.

There's a lot more to do in Seville. If you like sherry, of course there's lots to do in Jerez. We found the horse show in Jerez not as good as in Vienna.

I have to agree with Tim... I would not choose Jerez as my home base. If you do have the time a trip to Morocco is interesting, but unless you have seen most of southern Spain it seems like a waste for just a day. If you do go I would spend the night. As far as Portugal you could see the souther coast, but that is such a small piece of what Portugal has to offer... I would visit as much of Spain (Granada, Sevilla,Arcos de Frontera, Malaga, and many of the other great locations in the south.

Business, study, family, friends, free accommodation - there are reasons why less obvious choices are sometimes made.

Yes, I am visiting my daughter who is there on business and room and such are taken care of so it is my home base.
Was hoping there was festivals or something going on or some must-see.

Jerez has several festivals that take place throughout the year, but unfortunately, not when you will be there - The Jerez Festival in late Feb and early March, The Horse Fair in May and the Sherry festival in early Sept.

The only holiday I know of going on in November is All Saints Day, Nov. 1st. There also appears to be a Film Festival in Jerez in November - see this website for specifics on this and other events in Andalucía: www.andalucia.com/festival/monthlyguide.htm

Go to Arcos by bus. Go to Cadiz and Seville by train. While you are in Jerez, see the horse show at the Royal Equestrian School. Take the Tio Pepe tour.
