Why is Gerona not mentioned in RS’s travel book?

Hi,
Heading to Spain next year and we’re considering visiting Gerona. But surprised it is not mentioned in our Rick Steve’s guide book. For those who have been, would you recommend a day trip there from Barcelona? Thanks!

I had forgotten that; it is an odd omission.

Girona is a very good day trip. The historic center is atmospheric. Part of it is fairly touristy and has lots of restaurants (the city has some highly-regarded restaurants, I believe); the other part is quieter. It has a walkable wall, two old churches, an art museum and a Jewish-history museum.

These days you'll find a lot of web resources using the Catalan and Spanish spelling of the city name, Girona.

I learned today that Gerona is the Spanish spelling. I've always known it as Girona, the Catalan spelling. I've flown from the airport there several times and spent 2 or 3 hours in the old centre once. I'd love to spend more time there now I know more about it than I did back then.

There are so very many wonderful towns and cities in Spain that are not covered by RS.
Same is true for Italy.

Just my opinion, but I disagree that the Rick Steves guidebooks report only limited sites, "but cover them well." I think the books are excellent for a first-time visitor to a site. There are typically suggestions on transportation, finding accommodations, and reasonably complete guidance on places to explore for an initial visit. However, for a long term stay in a site or for a repeat visitor, the Rick Steve guidebooks do not provide extensive coverage. This is not meant as a criticism because these books provide a valuable service, but, in my opinion, they aren't comprehensive and "in-depth" for even those sites they include. .

Anita is right. Consider the target audience for the guidebooks to be American tourists who are looking to make their first and maybe only 2-week vacation to a particular country. You can't cover everywhere. And it takes a considerable amount of resources to keep what they already have up to date.
