Susan, I strongly recommend the Barri Gotic, which is Catalan for Gothic Quarter. It's Barcelona's mysterious birthplace of narrow, winding lanes and hidden squares. The neighborhood is packed with great eateries and A-level history. It's where the Romans started Barcelona. Picasso used to drink in the Barri at a bar and restaurant called Els Quatre Gats (The Four Cats); there is an evocative Jewish Quarter called El Call, where 4,000 residents were packed into just a handful of streets; and the Placa del Rei is where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella welcomed home Columbus in 1493 from the New World with Native American guests. It has a very medieval flavor.
