Am in the initial stages of researching a winter '24-'25 visit to Andalucia, starting in Granada where we'll collect a rental car to explore the Pueblas Blancas ... probably basing ourselves in Ronda.
Last stop will be Seville where the plan is to return the car and then spend 5-7 nights exploring the city and the surrounding area. From everything I've read it looks like Barrio Santa Cruz is the place to be, and it appears to be Rick's preference as well based on what I've gleaned from his guidebooks.
Was just wondering if anyone here had any other ideas or opinions regarding local neighborhoods to use as a base for an extended stay in Seville. Would like to be within walking distance of the Old Town, the Alcazar, etc. but don't mind hoofing it a bit if there are hidden gems out there that I'm not aware of.
Tentatively planning to do this in March '25, but would be interested in opinions about maybe moving that up into January or February if that's better time to visit ... both the city and the region. TIA
Santa Cruz is pretty and central, but it's quite touristy. When I'm in a city for more than a couple of nights I appreciate staying in more residential areas, which allows me to get a better feel of what life is like in that place.
If that might interest you for Seville, I'd suggest looking across the river in Triana or just north of the center, around Las Setas. They're conveniently located, but a bit more mixed with locals.
I don't like chilly, wet weather and I don't like short days, so for me March would be far preferable to January or February. I went to Andalucia in early April 2019 and had very pleasant temperatures. By early May it was warming up quite a bit, so I can see that some folks would say May is a bit late to go.
Easter is on Aril 30, 2025, so the big hotel-rate bump that occurs in Holy Week will not affect you. That's an extremely busy time of year in Andalucia.
We stayed at Hotel Kivir right over the river from the Triana Market and near the Plaza de Toros de la Real. Loved the location and the hotel.
I recommend the neighborhood of Los Remedios or Triana. They are well connected to the city center and are less noisy.
There is an airbnb or vbro very close to Triana bridge in Triana. It was a perfect location. Not crowded like the center but just over the bridge so you could be in the center of town in 10-15 minute walk.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions.
I'll take a closer look at the Triana neighborhood.
Looking at historical weather for Granada, Ronda and Seville it does look like March would be the better option for a visit.
Question: how are the crowds that time of year (ie March)? My assumption has been that by traveling during the low or shoulder season that we'd avoid most of the congestion at popular attractions. Am I correct on that score or do I need to rethink this?
Thanks again.
We are just back from Andalucia and loved our stay at H10 Casa de la Plata which is near Plaza del Salvador. The location was excellent for walking everywhere and much less touristy than Barrio Santa Cruz.
I traveled to to spain once, in March 2022. I spent 4 nights in Seville. But I could have occupied myself with 5 or 6 nights. I spent 2 nights in Granada, 2 nights in Cordoba. I skipped or missed the pueblas Blanca and Ronda. In Seville, I stayed at "Hotel Patio de las Cruces, at Cruces 10, (Old Town), 41004 Seville. It was a low end but still good enough place, with the rooms opening onto balconies that overlooked a courtyard, no breakfast or fancy amenities. I am not aware of anything wrong with the neighborhood. My taxi dropped me off on the side of a quiet street and then I had to walk another 100 or more yards on narrow stone or brick paved alleys to the hotel entrance.
