Where to stay in Almería

I'm planning to visit Almería in Andalusia for a few days this April and I'm trying to decide whether to stay in the city, or out at one of the beaches. It seems that most of the city hotels I've looked at are within a km or two of the beach, so it's probably easy to walk or use public transportation. Besides, the city seems to have a lively dining and nightlife scene, so that might be a better option. Also, is there public transportation out to Cabo de Gata?

We stayed at Hotel AC Almería, at Pl. Flores, 1, when we were there about 8 years ago. It was a short walk to the Alcazaba and the market. We walked to the historic Cable Inglés (2km/1.2mi). The beach is a little further, but we didn’t go to it. We had a rental car so can’t speak to public transportation.

If you were more interested in the beach than in-town sites, we enjoyed Mojácar just down the coast. We stayed at the Parador. It had a pool and was across the street from the beach.

There are some buses to San José, from where you can easily walk to the beautiful Playa de los Genoveses. But I would seriously consider renting a car for the day instead to see the entire San José - La Isleta del Moro - Rodalquilar area, possibly coming back via Níjar if there is still time.

Thanks so much. I am looking at that same hotel, the AC. Great idea to rent a car to explore the area. Thanks again.
