We are 2 60+ couples planning travel to Spain this fall. We would like to visit Barcelona region, but don't want to stay in the city per se. We will have a car, so day trips to Barcelona, Vic, Flaca and Catalan region will be feasible. Can anyone suggest an area or town we can rent a vacation property (apt., villa, house or condo) to use as a home base to explore this area? Thanks!
How many nights do you have, and does it have to be one single base, because the attractions in Catalunya are widely scattered.
Honestly there is so much to see in Barcelona that I'd want to spend part of my time right in the city. Otherwise, you'll spend a great deal of time traveling to and from the city day after day. Commuting by car might not be practical for reasons of traffic and parking. Do you have no interest in the modernista architecture? If that is the case, staying elsewhere is perhaps more viable.
I like Girona a great deal but don't know anything about Flaçà.
Sorry I cannot suggest any specific area or town, but I can provide you with some info that can help you to make that decision:
Welcome to Catalonia
Catalonia Experience
Map of roads in Catalonia
Routes and getaways
PS. btw, it's not "the Barcelona region" (LOL!)... it's the small nation of Catalonia, where Barcelona is its capital city.
I would not recommend day trips to Barcelona. There's just too much to see and do there, and traffic (and presumably parking) is miserable.
On the coast north of Barcelona to El Masnou perhaps. R1 Rodalies will quickly get you into Barcelona plus Girona, Vic and Costa Brava are close by with a car.
