Where in Spain -- mid-June

Hello folks:

I will fly from the US to Copenhagen in early June and end my Europe trip in Barcelona in the third week of June. It's going to be my second visit in Copenhagen and my SO has a music event to attend in Barcelona. This leaves us with approx. one week (second week of June) with no fixed destination. Where should I go? Theoretically, this place could be anywhere in Europe, but we don't want to fly too much. So, somewhere in Spain with a direct transit link with Barcelona would be great. I have been to Madrid and NW Spain. Yet, from Madrid, I have not made day trips to any charming town nearby except Salamanca. So, this would be a good time to do it, together with Zaragoza (en route to Barcelona).

From Google Flights, Madrid is the cheapest to fly to (Iberia). There are also flights served by low cost airlines to Barcelona and Bilbao.

I saw Carlos' post about the water shortage in Barcelona. However, we already purchased tickets to the music event and paid for our hotels. We promise to be conscious of our water use.

Zaragoza works, but so would León, Burgos, Logroño or any combination of cities. Zaragoza could be very hot by then, but that wouldn’t stop me from visiting. You could also head south towards Alicante and Valencia. There are plenty of options.

The trend is to "head North". You can get a fast train to the Asturias region now from Madrid, then work your way east through Bilbao or San Sebastian, then to Barcelona. If flying directly to Bilbao, then that works well, you could occupy more than a week just on the Basque region and Zaragoza on the way to Barcelona.

From the probable-weather perspective, I'd prefer the Basque Country at that time of year. I look forward to returning to Zaragoza when I can enjoy it more; I was there in the summer.
