What To Do ON New Years Day?

We'll be in the Madrid area on New Years Day. Seems pretty much everything will be closed.

We've thought about taking a train up to Avila (we'll be visiting Toledo and Segovia on the 2nd and 3rd) and just walking around for awhile.

Any suggestions for what to do on New Years day in Avila? Anything worth seeing that will actually be open? Or, assuming decent weather, any outdoor walks/activities that would work?

Or, any suggestions for Madrid on New Years day?

The day trip is a good idea and enough for a holiday.
We went out in Seville and rang the New Year in a club like the locals do and stayed our to after 2am and slept in and took a day trip to the beach at Cadiz and had a picnic.

Thanks. I'm assuming pretty much nothing--including restaurants?--will be open in Avila on New Years day. Anybody been in Spain on New Years day and have some experiences?
