What to do in Caceres?

I will be staying 4 nights in Caceres in Oct, principally because it looks awesome. I will take a day trip to Merida on one day and the rest will be in Caceres (no car).

What are your favorite sites and activities in this town? I looked briefly at some tours, but seems like finding one in English might be difficult.

Can’t wait to go, looks like a special place!

We too will be there later this year for a couple nights. For things to see in the town I have the Plaza Mayor, Arco de la Estrella, Torre Bujaco, Palace los Golfines de Abajo, and Plaza de San Jorge. Most of our time will be spent simply walking around.

Prior to Cáceres we’ll have a couple nights in each Trujillo and Guadalupe. Afterwards we’ll have two nights in Mérida. Outside of Cáceres is Natural Monument Los Barruecos. We will have a rental car and will visit places outside the cities as we travel between them.

I spent two nights in Caceres and two nights in Merdia on my last trip to Spain and greatly preferred Merida. I found there weren't a lot of sights in Caceres, and the town itself was pretty sleepy. Everyone travels differently, so you may enjoy just wandering around and enjoying the ambience. I would think 4 nights is a lot for Caceres, you might want to switch your plans if possible.

I also had a car and visited the surroundings during the day--Los Barruecos, Monfrague, Alcantara. You might see if the tourist office offers any excursions. Barruecos may be reachable by public transport.
In evening, we enjoyed walking the town and shopping for food items, and dining in this excellent food town!

Caceres is pretty cool but there really isn't a lot to do right in town.
- Walking the area inside the walls/GoT sites + Museum + Walls = maybe 3-4 hours
- Evening Paseo
- Dinner
So you've kinda seen Caceres in a day. It's a great place to just chill and soak up the vibe. You are well-situated to explore some of the surrounding places but you need a car to do that. Consider renting a car for a couple of days from a place in Caceres. Unlike some other Spanish towns, it's easy to park nearby most places you'll be sleeping.

You can easily pop by Trujillo by bus from Cáceres. It is worth it, it takes a few hours to visit.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I might have to rethink things. It seems more like it is a good base if you have a car and use it as a springboard to go elsewhere in the region. More of a nice place to unwind in the evenings.

I’m not opposed to driving, but trying not to at this moment. I may change to Salamanca or Valencia where there is more action otherwise. Spain has way too many tempting options!

I had a car, but it is totally linkable with other extremadura cities via bus. If you do some 1-night "flop and drops" you can see a chunk of Spain that most Americans never see. They are real Rick Steves-ish backdoors. The cities are small enough and close enough to make that work.

Normally I don't travel that way, but I totally could see doing it here.
