Thank you for guidance on how to find the correct bus to take to Bayonne, where to get off, and how far that is from our first hotel, Mercure Bayonne Centre Le Grande hotel.
This board is not staffed by RIck Steves employees. If you are taking the Rick Steves tour, you should get info on how to get to your first hotel 30 days before your trip starts. I took this tour back in 2017 and we stayed at the same hotel; however, I took the train from Paris to Bayonne.
From the airport website, it shows that you take bus #3 to Bayonne:
https://biarritz.aeroport.fr/en/parking-transport/buses/
If you put the airport and your hotel into googlemaps and choose the public transportation option, it shows you take the bus to Marie de Bayonne and then you walk 4 minutes to the hotel.
Thirty days before departure, you should log into your RS tour account for instructions on how to reach your first hotel.
This is what the instructions said last year when I took this tour (your first tour hotel may be different):
Biarritz Pays Basque Airport to Hotel Les Basses Pyrenees
By Bus
Local Chronoplus buses depart outside arrivals every 15-30 minutes, from 7:00 to 23:00 (less frequent Sat-
Sun). The trip takes about 30 minutes to get to central Bayonne.
Exit the arrivals hall and catch bus #3 (towards Gare de Bayonne Parvis). Buy a ticket (€1.30) at the stop or
from the driver (best to pay with coins, drivers may refuse larger notes). Get off at Saint-Léon. From here, it’s a
six-minute walk to the hotel.
Get off the bus, turn to face oncoming traffic and start walking in the direction from which the bus came.
Cross the crosswalk to your left and follow the sidewalk as the street curves to the left and becomes the tree-
lined Avenue de Pampelune. Continue straight ahead; the trees will disappear, and the street will become Rue
Tour de Sault. The Hotel Les Basses Pyrenees is ahead on the left at #13, built into the old town ramparts.
By Taxi
A taxi from the airport to the hotel should cost around €30 and take about 20 minutes.
I took this tour last month. I was tired, so I took the taxi option from the Biarritz airport and it was so easy and barely hit the 30-euro mark with tip included. We had lots of rain during our Bayonne stay (which evidently is not unusual), so that might be an extra reason to taxi directly to the hotel and not have to walk from the bus stop.
(I agree that you will receive explicit instructions from the Rick Steves company ahead of our your tour.)
