Verizon plan vs cheap local phone vs add a local sim card to my smartphone

Planning to spend about a month in Spain. Have several long, important calls back to the US (about 3 hours’ worth each week). Verizon has a “Travel Pass” option that provides 24 hours of unlimited talk, text and data for $10. Any time I use the phone for anything but Wifi it starts a 24 hour clock and costs $10. I can cover many of my longer calls during one 24 hour period each week and may be able to use skype with wifi for the rest but this doesn’t help for local calls throughout the week (contacting hotels, coordinating with my travel partners etc.

It might be more cost effective to buy a cheap local mobile phone with time on it or get a local sim card for my smartphone (which is unlocked) but I am comfortable with my smartphone as it is. I’d be nervous about relying solely on a cheap local phone or modifying my phone which has a lot of information on it that I want to be able to access. My current thought is to just use my smart phone as it is with Verizon Travel Pass and perhaps buy a cheap local phone with time on it for local calls. Does this make any sense?

If you think I should buy a cheap phone or get a local sim card do you have any suggestions about what company to deal with in Spain. I have read that Vodafone and Movistar are good and that it’s often more economical to buy phones from a large retailer like Carrefour but I don’t know.

If you can use VOIP for your calls to the States, the simplest thing would be to purchase a local SIM card, provided that your phone is unlocked and will work on European bands. (Most newer phones cover all bands.) There's no need to enrich Verizon. There should also be no need to by a phone when abroad. Either Movistar or Vodaphone are great providers.

John,

Here is another option...

If you have an unlocked phone laying around in your home, you could take it on your trip and buy a local SIM card there.

When we traveled to Spain (October 2015), I took my old flip phone, purchased a Lebara SIM card at the Atocha train station in Madrid. I paid €10 and it provided 400 minutes of calling time (international & local calls) for 30 days. It was a great deal!

I have an unlocked iPhone and I am currently in Spain. I purchased a Vodafone SIM card for monthly use. It was $20 Euros and I have 4 GB data and 100 minutes of calls - anywhere in Spain.

I like Vodafone, they have good coverage in Spain. This plan does not give me international calls though. For that I would look into Skype service or MagicJack.

I use the $10 plan.. I travel a lot on business and hate fussing with a second phone.. But I mainly need cellular data when I'm out.

But now days I almost never make any voice calls.. But when I do I find that Wifi calling works just fine by one of three methods:

1) Depending on where you are and if you have wifi calling enabled through Verizon, it also works most places in Europe. So I effectively do a free VOIP call automatically. You just need to make sure you get the logo so you know. I typically turn off roaming to ensure I don't foobar.

2) Facetime audio from my iphone.. If to anyone else using an iphone.. Voice quality is always very good, much better than cellular.

3) Google Hangouts... - can make a wifi call to any phone number in US, regardless of if they are using hangouts. This is more or less a competitor to skype but it works easy and reliable. I rarely use skype anymoe.
