Valladolid vs Salamanca

I’ll be traveling in Spain in August flying into Madrid then heading to the northern coast then over to the Betanzos area for the eclipse. On my way back to Madrid I’d like to stop one night in either Valladolid or Salamanca. Would anyone have a strong recommendation for one over the other?

It looks like Salamanca might be more scenic, and Valladolid would be less touristy.

Salamanca is one of my favourite cities in Spain. Very old university town with character, great to wander around, sit in Bars, eat the local specialities.
Valladolid is more ordinary, although I did get caught without a coat in one of the biggest rainstorms i have ever seen, so may be prejudiced!

I’ve never been to Valladolid but I loved Salamanca. Beautiful main square, university vibe as already mentioned, beautiful Art Nouveau/Art Deco museum (Casa Lis) and surprisingly interesting museum of automotive history.

Do a little research to see which city has something of interest to you.

For me, I’ve researched Valladolid and have driven by it numerous times and nothing drew me to it enough to stop. I’m sure it’s as nice as other cities, but holds no interest for me. You are correct that you will see fewer tourists.

As already mentioned, Salamanca has some beautiful architecture and nice main plaza. I’ve been to it three times. Of the two cities, I’d choose Salamanca.

Valladolid is one of Spains capitals of suckling lamb. For suckling pig, it's Segovia, for suckling lamb: Valladolid.
Other than that I know nothing.

I've been to both cities. Definitely Salamanca. Unless you just want to get away from tourists, then Valladolid is the place for that.
