Valencia

Any suggestions for places to eat, visit? Will be in central area 3 days next week.

May be on this site somewhere but you have to scroll thru comments on all Spain - not exactly user friendly! Guess Rick wants us to buy his guidebook.

Thanks,
Bob A.

RS doesn't cover Valencia sadly. Here's some we enjoyed last year:

Panorama at Las Arenas beach-awesome ocean view. Good chicken+rabbit paella. Loved all dishes, very nice desserts. Ate here 3 times!
La Pepica-loud, touristy, poor value paella.
Seu Xerea-eu19 set lunch menu very good.
La Comisaria-creative fusion with an asian twist. Soft shell crab yum! Enjoyed watching chef create dishes.
Refugio-eu12 3-course lunch. Duck appetizer rocks!
Canalla Bistro by Ricard Camarena

Using the search field above gives you these results for Valencia. If you narrow it down to Travel Forum responses, then you can also further narrow those by time period.

Also, Lonely Planet sells PDF chapters of their guidebooks online for $5 or less, so it's a nice solution if you only need that chapter. Of course, I would buy Rick's guidebook for the regions that he covers.

I purchased a Valencia e-guide online from Berlitz, which was the most reasonable one I was able to find. I also printed out some guided walks off of a Valencia tourist site (I can't recall the name of the website at the moment).

You definitely need to visit the Central Market. Central Bar (Ricard Camarena) was really tasty unlike his flagship Michelin-starred restaurant which was a disappointment to me.

I had paella at Levante and Restaurante Navarro. Levante was a bit further from the touristy area and had more locals it seemed.

I also recommend you try horchata at the Santa Catalina horchata place. Out of all the horchata drinks I had in my three weeks in Spain recently, this one was my favorite.

For sites, check these out: Museo de Ceramica, Ciutat de les Arts i Sciences, Main Train station, and Ayutamiento (free entrance with a great balcony view over the square in front). I've left out a few places, but this should be a good start.

Valencia is one of the best, but most overlooked cities in Spain and Europe. It lacks the marquee attractions or museums that more famous cities have, but it has an old world charm and character and a very laid back culture. Plan to spend some relaxing times at cafes and eating tapas along the boulevards and in Plaza de la Reina.

Lots of good ideas from the other posters. The cathedral is worth checking out and most definitely the food market hall. The Science Center is well worth visiting, although you don't have to visit the museums if you're not interested in their collection. Just the overall complex is one of the most amazing works of modern architecture in the world. I would also stroll down the park that follows the old riverbed. Great views of the city and a nice way to spend a pleasant morning.

Paella of course is the main food you must have while there. A good option in the city center, not far from the cathedral, is Bodego de la Sarieta. Tiny place on a tiny alleyway but great paella.

Well played Marbleskies!!

Everyone's posts are making me want to visit but yes RS stay away. I spent a few hours in Valencia on my way to Teruel - Valencia was the closest bus connection at the time (1998).

It's now on my Spain list.
