Using the phone in Spain

I have a dumb question. I have been to Europe a dozen times, and I every time I fumble around trying to make a phone call, finally succeed through trial and error, because I can never remember what I did the last time. My question is,

If I am in Spain, calling someone who lives in Spain, and I am using a US-based phone, not using a local sim card, do I need to dial the exit code (011) first, and then the +34 country code? Or not?

For example, I land at the airport in Spain, and my instructions from my Airbnb host says, "when you land, call me at +34 123 456 789." Am I supposed to dial an exit code (011) first? Meaning, 011 +34 then the 9 digit number.

I have found that many people in Spain use apps like WhatApp, Telegram, Line, etc. This is much easier and cheaper for communicating in Europe and back home as well. One of the best things that I did last trip (and doing the same next month) is renting a WIFI hot spot from https://www.spaininternet.net/. GREAT service all over Spain, better that most of the WIFI I got in 4 and 5 star hotels. Connects up to 10 devices simultaneously so it can be shared with everyone in your group. They will ship it to you at your hotel and you just drop it off in the airport on the way home. Really simple. Cost goes down to 2 euro per day for unlimited use, depending on how long you keep it.

I'm using an iphone, my provider is Verizon, and I am using their international plan. So to reiterate, I would be in Spain, calling someone in Spain, using an iphone with Verizon as my provider.

But I think I have found the answer, and that is, that I don't need to type the exit code (011), because the "+" is the same thing. I would just type something like "+34 123 456 789."

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

No need to dial (01) just dial the number provided including the country code.

I always have the same problem. I use the Verizon Global plan and even after many trips to Spain, sometimes I cannot figure it out.

So do I also understand that we just cail the country code for Spain and then the number? Do I need to put the plus sign before the country code, 34??? I'd love to know this once and for all, not sure why I was not as smart as Marty to just ask here!!!

Thank you!!

I am fairly sure you would need to dial + then the country cold (for Spain, it's 34) then the local phone number.

Like this: +34 123 456 789 <Don't type the spaces, of course. Just +34123456789 <like that.

This is for using a Verizon phone in Spain while using the Verizon international plan.

Alternatively, the + sign can be replaced with 00 and then the country code. As far as I know, it´s the same all over Europe, either tape 00 or the + sign plus the country code and the telephone number, it´s the right (and only) way.
