wanted to check if ubers are in Madrid Granada and Sevilla as we'll need to transport to and from airports/bus stations.
I'm not anti-UBER, but in Spain I use taxis without a problem and at reasonable cost.
Uber site should tell you, but a couple of years ago any effort to start in Spain was met with resistance from taxi drivers. The price is already low and Uber doesn't need to be there. There is a ride sharing app, but in Spanish and more for rural travel. It is not well vetted, so just a Joe or Jan heading to Seville from Granada and has space in the back of his /her tiny Punto. Do they have the insurance to cover you? Not sure. For city, just grab a cab. Metered and affordable. That being said, if flying into Granada, the airport shuttle bus is maybe 3E. Comfortable and sane. The local bus runs from the main bus terminal to down town. Even cheaper.
I get the impression (perhaps wrongly), that taxis in many parts of USA and elsewhere are best avoided - crooked, unclean, unsafe? That's not the case in Spain where you can take a "normal" taxi with confidence.
But I think Uber may now operate in Seville. Cabify do - they're a sort of slightly less evil version of Uber. Overall, though, I'd just stick to the city taxis. There will be plenty by the airport or main stations, or you can book one. Incidentally, depending on where you are staying and which coach station you are using, taxi may not be needed and and you can walk or use the tram/bus service.
Nick, in NY city, I prefer taxis, my husband prefers Ubers. My problem with Ubers is that they often have difficulty figuring out where you are when picking you up whereas the taxis are waiting right outside the hotel and tourist destinations.
I have never had any problems with taxis in Spain, except when I mis-pronounced the name of my hotel and they had no idea where I wanted to go. (Definitely have the name and address written down - by showing where I wanted to go, I got there with no difficulty). Taxis use the meter except for special rates (see below), and any legitimate extra charges such as for putting bags in the trunk are listed on a placard in the taxi.
From the Madrid airport to the center (a large designated area), it's a flat fare of €30 and no tipping is needed beyond this.
thanks so much! do they take credit card to pay for the taxis in spain? I wasn't planning on getting too much money exchanged to euros
