trip to spain and portugal

Hi,
We are planning a trip in June to Spain and Portugal. We will start in Madrid ,stay there for 3 nights and then start our trip with a rented car . We thought of going first to Toledo , on the 6th of June . Any suggestions as to where to continue from there?
On the 17th of June we thought of staying another night in Madrid , as the following day we are flying back from Madrid, so altogether we have 11 nights outside of Madrid.
Thanking you in advance,
D

I would forget about a car if you are looking at just concentrating on 'first time highlights'.

June
3. Arrive Madrid. Train to Seville (3N)
4. Seville sights
5. Day to Cordoba (Mezquita)
6. Fly to Lisbon (4N)
7. Lisbon sights
8. Day to Sintra
9. Day to Belem & Cascais
10. Fly to Barcelona (4N)
11-13. Barcelona sights
14. Train to Madrid (4N)
15. Madrid sights
16. Day to Toledo
17. Day to Segovia
18. Depart Madrid

Where you go depends on what your interests are and what specific places you want to see. You must have had something in mind when you decided on Spain and Portugal. Why do you want to use a car for this trip?

Thank you both for your replies.

We love to travel with a car because we are then more flexible and you can also go to places which are less reachable with public transport. We will be four adults .

We don't plan to visit Barcelona on this trip but rather the southern part of Spain and Portugal.

Is Porto worth the journey?

What we had in mind is to fly to Madrid, then go to Toledo from there to Granada or maybe skip Granada and go to Seville , Cordova and then to Portugal and on the way back to Madrid maybe go to Salamanca and Segovia.

Could you please comment and give your suggestions.

Thank you all,
D

Based on the bulk of your proposed itinerary, a car is an expensive nuisance.

I'd skip Salamanca (on David's good proposed itinerary) in order to have a real day in Toledo. The arrival day doesn't really count because of likely fuzzy-headedness after the overnight flight.
