Working on plans for a first trip to Spain with my husband, perhaps in February, perhaps the RS 8 Day trip to Madrid and Barcelona. Do you recommend going in the spring instead if possible, because February / winter weather is problematic?
Madrid is colder than Barcelona and my Barcelona experience in February was still chilly. So 'problematic' depends on where you are from as far as cold tolerance and chances of winter weather affecting your flights. It would definitely be more pleasant in Spring, but as most of the trip is indoors, then go when it suits you.
Thank you for this quick and helpful response!
I was in Barcelona the last week of January this year, and in Madrid in mid February a few years ago. The weather was perfect, as far as I was concerned. Cool and mild, mostly sunny. I had one morning of light rain in Barcelona. I chose those times to visit Spain because I'm not very heat tolerant. Fewer crowds, too.
You can check daily historical weather conditions for any month for the past 10 years or more on this site. In general the weather is comfortable but variable. In my experience over several visits in February and March, the weather wasn't an issue. You shouldn't need a winter parka, but a warm scarf and warm gloves and water-resistant shoes would be good to pack.
I took that tour, my first RS tour, in 2014. I got to Barcelona 2 days before and stayed in Madrid for another week solo after the tour ended. We had one evening of rain but that was it, cloudy frequently but not always. I took an all weather type coat and was very comfortable. Check the forecast and the historical weather temperatures as well. I’m a wimpy Texan when it comes to being cold. I really loved the whole experience and with tourist numbers always increasing, I think traveling off season is a very good idea.
Thank you so much, for all of your very helpful responses!! Appreciated!!!
I have also taken the RS "Best of Barcelona and Madrid" tour and I highly recommend it. Our tour was the first of the season, beginning in Barcelona in mid February. The weather was fine although Madrid, at a much higher elevation was near freezing as we departed our hotel each morning.
The weather is not guaranteed but at least springtime will have guaranteed longer days.
This year we were in Barcelona for five days the last week of February and were very happy with the weather. Then six night in Seville with fantastic weather. Then in Madrid two days the first week of March where it rained quite a bit. The trip was great with a great award flight rate, lower prices and smaller crowds. We’re going back next June but then only because we’re taking our 11 year old grandchild. Otherwise I’d gladly go back late February to March.
@ btreacy1 ... do you normally live in kind of Florida-like weather or Montana-like weather?
We went to Barcelona, Seville, Granada, and Madrid in February, 2024. The weather was mostly excellent. It rained a few times and was coldest in Madrid. I layered a sweatshirt under my Columbia rain jacket and was fine on the colder wet days.
I was in Madrid and Barcelona in February 2020. Barcelona was fine, but Madrid was a little too cold for me, with temperatures in the 30s. I had to wear gloves, or my hands would freeze. But I'm from Florida.
You are going at a temperamental time of year, it could be sunny and in the 60s or turn cold.
I have been to Madrid twice in February, both I found nice, it was mostly sunny, needed a jacket in the evening, but really enjoyed it.
Similar with Barcelona, the water moderates the temperature, but it was sunny and pleasant, that was February as well.
I wouldn't expect 70s, but when you look at historical data, I would assume it will be to the warmer side of the range, or at least that has been the trend. February is one of the drier months of the year, so that helps, even if cooler, if the sun is out, that makes a big difference over the same temp with clouds and wet.
Winter in Madrid would be a cakewalk for me but I'd be leaving Minnesota. If you're leaving southern CA or Florida, your tolerance will be different. Check historical February weather for your destination.
One thing besides weather... winter days are shorter so less daylight and more possibilities of limited hours at some attractions. The flip side would be sparse crowds which would win the day for me.
