Trip to Caralonia, Spain

I have a trip scheduled to the Catalonia region of Spain in December. Given the political issues in the region, is it still safe to go there?

Yes.

I'll hazard a guess and suggest that you're unlikely to take part in any possible demonstrations and therefore you will not be at any risk of potential harm. My suspicion is that the whole situation is going to remain relatively calm, the Madrid government have appeared to have taken the wind out of the sails of the separatist movement for now.

I would not say that Madrid has taken the wind out of the sails with their actions yesterday and today. Based on my visit there a week or so ago - Madrid taking over Catalonia will only incite the passions of those supporting independence. That being said - it is safe to go to Barcelona. If you are worried I would avoid Placa Catalunya - but there is so much to see in Barcelona - you can avoid protests easily. It is a very interesting time to visit.

I agree. We've just been there staying in the Eixample area. But for a person or two going by wearing the Catalan flag on their way to/from a demonstration I presume and the helicopters flying about we wouldn't have known anything out of the ordinary was going on.

My wife and I were in Barcelona for 4 days two weeks ago. There were some demonstrations but nothing violent. We were there on Spain's National Day and saw many people walking around wearing Spanish flag capes and some with Catalonia flags. I saw nothing that made me feel concerned and there was no violence. My opinion is that by December the issue will be resolved and I hope it is without serious violence.

(I removed part of my post. I think it may have been outside the guidelines in that it made what could be considered a political statement.)
