Traveling to Spain

Hi all,

My girlfriend and I are going on a 90-day trip across Spain and Europe. We are in the planning phase on how many days in each country would be enough to be able to experience the culture and food scene of that country. Right now we are planning on itinerary for Spain (and possibly Portugal), the 5 stopping points on our travels are Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Seville, and Valencia. Our main focus of the trip is to really experience the food culture, we are both chefs, so we live and breathe food. After doing my homework, I have learned that those cities have the best food scenes, respectfully. Can anyone give me any insight on how long to spend in each city/ if you think there is a better city or outside town with a richer food culture. I am open for any insight I can get. This is my first time going to Spain.

Here is our first draft... 5 days in Barcelona, 5 days in Mardid, 3 days in Seville, either 1 or 2 days in Valencia and Granada. If we decide to go to Portugal we would probably only go for 2 days.

Thank you for the help!!

You will love the food!

5 days in Barcelona is a good amount and might allow for a daytrip.

5 days in Madrid is a lot to me, but not if you do some daytrips or really want to see all the museums. Toledo and Segovia are the most popular daytrips - Toledo is best as an overnight.

3 days in Sevilla is about perfect. Be sure to stop or daytrip to Cordoba to see the Mezquita and old town.

You need 2 nights in Granda to see the Alhambra and city.

Valencia can be a single night if you have an early arrival and late departure. Otherwise, much better with 2 nights (that also gives you 2 nights of tapas or paella). Valencia is one of my favorite food cities.

Portugal is really hard to get to from Spain - you pretty much have to fly. If that's ok for just 2 nights, Lisbon can be seen in a whirlwind with 2 nights.

Let me know if you want some restaurant recommendations.

What about San Sebastian? While I've not yet been, I hear and read constantly about the food culture of the Basque region.

Yes, San Sebastián is a glaring omission from a food perspective. I would forego a short visit to Portugal and concentrate on Spain.

Barcelona (4nts)
Valencia (2nts)
Granada (2nts)
Seville (3nts)
Madrid (4nts)
San Sebastián (3nts)
