Traveling in Northern Spain without a car?

Hello fellow travelers,

I'm just wondering if any of you have traveled in northern Spain via public transportation?
I may be interested in taking this route; San Sebastián => Bilboa => Gijón=> Santiago de Compostela & a few other places along the way.

I've read that having a car is ideal for traveling in this region of Spain. However, I'd prefer to travel via public transportation,
mainly so I can enjoy the scenery without the stress of driving.

Thanks for your help!

Priscilla

Santander & Oviedo are more interesting stops for you ...
San Sebastián => Bilbao => Santander => Oviedo => Santiago de Compostela
The narrow-gauge FEVE railway meanders across Spain’s northern coast between Bilbao (Basque Country) and Ferrol (Galicia).

There's regular buses between San Sebastian & Bilbao, under eu12 run by Pesa. Takes just over an hour. We used it to get to the airport. Alsa is another bus company.

Thanks Marika & David!

I have a question for you:
Which cities/ towns did you visit on your trip & which were your favorite?

In northern Spain sadly just 2 nights in San Sebastian & 1 in Bilbao. We drove to Bayonne, France for 2 nights to experience french Basque but in retrospect would have preferred extra time in San Sebastian. The ambiance, views and food were a highlight.

Hi Priscilla,
I traveled some in that area by public transportation about a month ago. I went from Salamanca to San Sebastian by train. I spent three nights in San Sebastian, then went by bus to Bilbao. The bus trip took 70 minutes (it departed and arrived on time) and it cost Euros 10.90, if I remember correctly. I spent two nights in Bilbao. From Bilbao I went back south by rail

I enjoyed my time in San Sebastian, but for me, the three nights were a bit too much. My time in Bilbao, however, was very enjoyable. If I were to do that trip again, I would reverse the times - 2 nights in San Sebastian and three nights in Bilbao. That extra day in Bilbao would allow me time to do a day trip to Guernica.
