We are planning to travel to Spain in October. What will be the best way to travel from Madrid to Seville and then to Barcelona. We will stay in each city for 4 days.
odessa,
I'd use the following method.....
- Madrid to Sevilla - Travel via AVE high speed train from Madrid-Puerta de Atocha to Sevilla Santa Justa. Travel time is a quick 2H:30M at 300 kmH and reservations are compulsory (provided with your ticket).
- Sevilla to Barcelona - There are two options you could consider, and the travel time will probably be about the same with both. Option 1 is to take the AVE train from Sevilla Santa Justa to Barcelona Sants. Travel time is about 5H:30M. Many of the trains on that route have one change in Madrid but there is one direct departure at 08:50, arriving Barcelona at 14:25. Option 2 is to take a flight with Vueling. They have several departures each day with a flight time of 1H:30M. Of course you'll need to add to that time to and from each airport, check-in, security, waiting, boarding and de-planing, etc. Of the two options, I'd probably go with the train in order to avoid the usual airport hassles, baggage limits, etc. The train would be a much more relaxing and pleasant journey.
If you wish to buy advance tickets for the high speed trains, use the RENFE website. Note that many discounted tickets are non-refundable and non-changeable once purchased. Also, tickets that require reservations are specific to one train, date and departure time.
AVE high speed train does Madrid to Sevilla in 2.5 hrs with very frequent departures.
AVE high speed train does Madrid to Barcelona in 3 hrs with very frequent departures.
Flights Sevilla to Barcelona are approx 1.5hrs. Check Vueling for cheap fares.
I made that same trip a couple of years ago. I used the high speed (AVE) trains for both legs (Madrid to Seville and Seville to Barcelona) and I was entirely satisfied with both. The ride was very comfortable. Also the travel times were excellent. With both trips being city center to city center, total travel time from Madrid to Seville was quicker than air and from Seville to Barcelona was about the same as air.
Thank you
