We are traveling from Ferrol to San Sebastian by narrow gauge train in early December and would like to stop somewhere along the route to break up the 20 hour train ride. Need suggestions on points of interest, where to spend the night and where to dine. Thank you.

I think you will have to change trains regardless at the following points.
Ferrol >> Oviedo >> Santander >> Bilbao >> San Sebastian

Santander is a very nice city located directly on the sea. I was there for a week about two years ago and thoroughly enjoyed my stay there. Bilbao is nice, farther north, also on the coast, with the main attraction being the Guggenheim Museum. Santander has a good walking city near the bus station and train station.
