Travel to Spain over the Holidays

Hello,

We are considering Spain as a destination for a family vacation (kids are 19 and 16) but must travel between 12/27 and 1/4. Any advise on whether Spain would be a good destination? We realize the weather may be cold and rainy, but are most concerned with whether or not businesses and museums will be open (ie restaurants). I have a couple of itineraries in mind, but would most likely be visiting Barcelona, Seville, Ronda, and perhaps going over to Tangier. I would appreciate any feedback! Thank you!

Forum etiquette: You should post your question once, in one place, not multiple times in multiple forums (try General Europe, since you're asking about multiple countries).

As to your question: it (probably) won't be freezing and miserable in these places. It might be rainy and/or cold, or it might be fairly mild, maybe even "balmy", but it won't be what most of us would consider "warm" (depends to some extent where you're from/what you're used to). And a lot depends on luck. Some things that are geared primarily for tourists might be shuttered but some things will still be open, albeit with limited hours. Entire towns do not close completely.

Friendly suggestion: Forget taking a ferry to Tangier. Morocco is great, but the day-trip ferry ports ensure you only see the absolute worst of it. The day-trip to any ferry port in Morocco is no different from going across the border to Tijuana or Juarez for a few hours and thinking that you experienced Mexico. If you want to visit Morocco (and you should), ditch the ferry and just fly to Marrakech or Fez for a few days - flights are dirt-cheap, it's easy, and it takes you to the real Morocco, where it's awesome. The ferry crossing and what you get on the other side is not worth your time, better to spend that in Spain or elsewhere.

You really only have a good week - 7 days. And New Year Day is pretty dead most places. We were in Seville over New Years a couple of years - absolutely nothing was open on New Year Day. In fact the whole area began shutting down around later pm on New Year eve. I would consider only two places. You don't have that much time.
