My daughter will be doing a Study Abroad trip in Santander, Spain for 7 weeks. What is the best way for her to use her phone (AT&T iPhone) while she is there both to contact us in the US and others in her group also in Spain?
Saludos! We have been in Spain for a month and I went back and forth with this one. I, however, do not have AT&T nor an iPhone (Verizon/Galaxy S3!). I'm also not tech savvy. I do have an iPad, though. Here's what I'm doing and it only cost me $10 euros. I called verizon and found out my cell is internationally-capable (terminology?). I went to a little mobile phone shop here and got a Spain SIM card and the gentleman took care of removing/installing the SIM cards. I'm able to make/receive calls and texts within Spain and France-no problems, so far. For calls to US, I use skype or FaceTime! Free WiFi (pronounced WEE-FEE) is easily available all over Spain- even in laundromats. In Oviedo, it's even available on the public buses! ¡Buena suerte!
What kind of IPhone does your daughter have? I just enabled my AT&T IPhone 6 with Wifi calling (which you can do for free) and it will allow me to make free calls and texts to US phone numbers while on wifi. You can set it up yourself if you have an IPhone 6 or newer, or you can call AT&T and have them walk you through it. There is no charge to enable it and it is free to use. When it is activated, the phone thinks it's in the US whenever you're connected to wifi and follows whatever calling plan you have here (which I assume is unlimited calls and texts to US numbers). I had no idea this was even an option until a few weeks ago.
