Travel from Sacramento, CA to Tenerife

Hi

I'm looking for advice on traveling from Sacramento, CA, USA to Tenerife next February.

With United and American Airlines (preferred due to FF miles) there are long layovers one or both directions, and I'm wondering if it would be better to book the round trip ticket into/out of Madrid, or perhaps Jerez, then buy a separate RT to/from Tenerife on Ryan, Veulig, Iberia, etc?

My trip is actually going to be about a week in the Canary Islands and a week in Jerez/Cadiz area, so any advice on the best way to arrange the air and land transport for this would be most welcome!

Consider flying from SFO to Barcelona.

Spend 2 nights in Barcelona ( adjusting to time difference, change in diet, getting back in motion) then fly onward to Tenerife.

What would be the advantage in going via Barca, vs Madrid or perhaps Jerez? I've been to Barca a couple of times, and don't want to spend 2 days there (it's gotten way too touristy!)

My guess is there are the most flights from Madrid to Tenerife, perhaps not so many from
Jerez.

If you actually have info on the itinerary I'm asking about please respond, I'm not looking for general travel advice (been to Spain a bunch of times already., I am looking for specific info as stated in my original post)
