What would be the best route by train for traveling from Barcelona to Lourdes? Would bus connections be needed? What is the estimate of time involved? Thank you Bob F
Hi, Bob. Travel time is 7 - 8 hours with 1 - 2 connections, all by train, three recommended departure options per day. See How to Look Up Train Schedules Online for the schedule link and tips.
Bob, you don't indicate when you will be traveling. Barcelona to Lourdes is a 6.5hr-8.0hr train journey depending on the train run you select. Expect 1-2 train changes at Toulouse or at Narbonne & Toulouse. You can actually purchase this ticket from the French SNCF at http://en.voyages-sncf.com No E-Ticket that you can print at home but they will mail the ticket to you. Here's a snapshot of what I see on the French website.

Or, you can try your luck with the Spanish train website www.renfe.com They have a direct TGV train run from Barcelona Sants to Toulouse Matabiau departing at 10:40 and arriving at 13:31. (Yes, I did say TGV. Here's what it looks like the German www.bahn.de http://gyazo.com/4356690b74ce5b85fe0882f74aadda9f I would suggest not trying to buy a ticket online from Renfe to Lourdes. When you get to Toulouse, simply buy the ticket to Lourdes. It's a 2hr train ride on a local regional train (possibly a train change as well). Trains depart at 16:20, 17:31 and 18:38 according to the current schedule.
Or, you can wait until you get to Barcelona and buy your tickets in advance at the Barcelona Sants station. Two cautions. 1) In the Barcelona Sants station there are two sets of ticket windows. One for buying today's tickets and another set for advance tickets. 2) They would not accept our credit card for a ticket out of Spain. They would accept it up to Figures-Villifant (Spain) but not any further. This also happened to Andrea from Sacramento who was 4 days behind us making the same kind of trip into France from Barcelona.
