I need to make my way from Madrid to Gijon and I have a couple of days. I'm looking at the bus from Madrid to Avila. Seems to be many buses and spend the night. The next day I would like to go to Segovia and again spend the night. It looks like there is only one bus that leaves Avila at 3:15pm. Is this a difficult bus to reserve? How far in advance? Should I skip Avila and just go to Segovia? Help please
I like Ávila and it’s worth a night. Its main draw is the wall encircling it. One can walk about 75% of the way around the town on the wall. Other than it, if you’re Catholic, there’s the church where Teresa of Ávila’s house once stood. The main plaza is small.
If transportation is limited between it and Segovia, then skip Ávila. With your couple nights stay in Segovia and possibly León. León is much larger than Ávila with more to do.
I'm not a fan of Avila and wouldn't spend any time there given several places I like much better are alternatives. (YMMV, of course). In addition to Segovia and Leon, there's also Oviedo. It's on the way from Leon to Gijon but much closer to Gijon. Oviedo is a decent-sized place known for some very old churches. It is fairly quiet when compared to Leon.
