Transportation home from Santiago de Compostela

After doing a portion of the Pilgrim's Way, we will be traveling home to LAX from Santiago de Compostela on June 30 or July 1. Any suggestions for the route home? Seems to make the most sense to fly out of SCQ through Madrid and then LA. Or would you take transport to Porto and then to LA.

Oh, also, we will be flying LAX to Lisbon and the only direct flight I see from LAX to Madrid only has 1 hour and 25 minutes to connect in Madrid to Lisbon. I don't feel comfortable about that short connection due to immigration.

Any input is welcomed! Thanks!

Trains back to Porto are indirect and inconvenient. There may be a bus service that's better. If the flight from SCQ did not work for you, then the next options would include A Coruna airport or a direct, 6-hour train to Madrid.

Your initial connection time at Lisbon sounds adequate, if you're traveling all on one ticket, with code-shared airlines. Your luggage will be checked through and any delays make it their responsibility to transport you to Madrid. This is even more important on the way home, when you connect to a longer, more expensive flight.

When I walked the Camino in 2015, I took the train from Santiago back to Madrid and flew home from there. It is a nice, relaxing 6 hour ride and it was a thrill for me to go whizzing past scenery that I had just spent weeks walking through.

Hi Barbara,
You may want to consider Norwegian air. I live in the SF Bay area and there is a direct Norwegian air flight from Oakland to Barcelona for a very, very good price. Then inside Spain I am taking flights on small airlines like Vueling to connect where I need to small and big airports. For example my flight from Bilbao back to Barcelona for the return trip is 27 euro's.

Hope this helps,
Liam

When I did the Camino in 2012 I flew from Santiago to Barcelona and spent a few days there to unwind on the beach--after 5 long weeks--I needed that! Easy to fly from Barcelona to anywhere.
Buen Camino!
