My husband and I are planning a trip to Bayonne, France heading to San Sebastian, Spain. How do we get from Bayonne to San Sebastian? Train or bus? Do we need reservations? There seems to be no direct route as we are going between two countries. Any help is appreciated. Muchas gracias. Marybeth
Regional trains run about hourly between Bayonne and Hendaye (see Train Schedules Online, which works better to search for just this leg, not the final destination) and don't require reservations. From Hendaye, change to the local EuskoTren, which runs to San Sebastian a few times per hour. In RS Spain book, see also connection notes at the end of the San Sebastian chapter (works the same in both directions).
It looks like DB does not have access to the Euskotren schedules, so you need to do it "by hand". There is fairly frequent train service from Bayonne to Hendaye. In Hendaye, change to the Euskotren to San Sebastion, where they use the Basque name of Donostia-Amara. Euskotren schedule is here.
Thank you so much for your help! Marybeth
