Transit passes in Madrid

Hi, everyone, my son is going to be attending a language-immersion program in Madrid next week. He'll need to commute several subway stops from his host family to his classes, so I was looking at transit options for him. I saw on the Madrid transportation website that a monthly youth card (for up to age 26) is only 20 euros, while cards for everyone else are much more expensive. (For example, a tourist card that covers transportation for only one week is 35 euros.) Does anyone know whether he can get this youth rate as a tourist? And does he need anything more than a passport to get the youth rate? Finally, can he purchase a pass at any subway station? Thanks in advance for any help you can give--we're not going with him, and the school he's attending doesn't seem very well organized, so I want to be able to help him figure it out in advance.

I would not expect him to need anything but the passport as proof of age; no residence ID. The monthly youth pass has to be loaded onto a Public Transport Card. See application forms and locations on that link.
