Trainline—can you change time of travel without canceling reservation?

We are wanting to take an earlier train than we have reserved but don’t see how to make the change without canceling the whole round trip reservation and starting over? Is there a way to do what we are trying to do?

Which train? Which kind of ticket?

Impossible to say without that information.

Are you in the app? When I look at my current reservations on the app, there is a link for each one to Mange my Booking. Once you click on that, you are given an option to change your train. Note, though, that I lose the ability to actually make a change once my train is in within 3 days of departure, generally.

Trainline is only a ticket reseller, and so what you can do depends on the conditions set by the railway.

Madrid - Toledo is an "Avant" train. Avant is RENFE's branding of fast commuter trains. As such the ticket is the same price bought months or seconds before departure, so you did not really need to buy this in advance using trainline. You should be able to change your ticket, so if the Trainline app does not permit it see if you can do it on the website. Or contact them.

If it looks like the ticket is actually directly issued by RENFE than maybe just have it exchanged at a station once in Spain.

If you can't change it, just throw the return half away and buy new tickets- buying on the RENFE website, or at Atocha station on the outbound journey, or at Toledo, should only cost you 11.90 Euro each.
Last night there was good availability that day on all trains.
