We would like to take a train from Lyon to Barcelona (Oct 30) and notice several options on various websites.Could use some guidance, please! Fastest way without needing to transfer is what we want to do. And when is the best time to book tickets, is now too soon? Suggestions for the best website to use would be appreciated. Thank you!

Use Trainline (https://www.trainline.eu) . They used to be called Capitaine Train. The French SNCF Website has always been cumbersome, and the Spanish Renfe Website less cumbersome, but Trainline's the way to go. The general rule is, as soon as you're ready to book a journey, and if the Website can book it, that's the best time.

The only direct train departs Lyon Part Dieu station at 14:23. Book it now for the best price, from $71 through Rail Europe or from €54 through www.trainline.eu.

The TGV website shows 54 EUR pp for the direct afternoon train on Oct 30. Look at www.trainline.eu, should be the same price, but easier credit card purchasing. Now is the cheapest price because as these low price seats sell out, only higher priced tickets will be available.

Thanks everyone. Now we just have to decide flying vs train....I do love taking the train, less stressful than an airport, it's so relaxing and the scenery can be great. But a lot longer journey for the same cost essentially.

If this would factor into your decision at all, while Lyon is a fabulous city with a tremendous cuisine scene, their airport has abysmal food options, and they're really expensive! If you fly, either eat before you depart Lyon for the airport, bring food with you to the airport, eat on the plane, or wait until you get to Spain.

We decided to do the train, tickets purchased...it's an adventure, right? Trains are just so cool and fun especially to those of us who live in the States in areas where they are not available. And dealing with airport security, etc just isn't as appealing. Thanks!

At 5hr 08min, the train may not have a time advantage, but would definitely by my preference in this case. Buy some food for lunch on the train, then it's a perfect arrival time into Barcelona for dinner.
