Train Tip

I was in the train station in Cadiz with about an hour before the train was to leave. I took a ticket in the train office to buy the tickets. Has the time ticked away and the line moved really slow. I started to worry that an hour wouldn’t be enough to buy tickets in the small train station.

So I created an account on Renfe and entered all four passengers, names and passports and selected seats so that I could buy the tickets online.

Then, for some reason, my credit card wasn’t going through. And I had to activate my cell line to get mobile data to call my card company.

By the time I got that sorted out, I went to complete the purchase on my phone and now I started getting all kinds of errors from them that the seats side selected were no longer available. I didn’t see a way of clearing the selections and starting over.

At that point the train was going to leave in about three minutes. I found a conductor who was in the midst of a personal phone call the side of the train. I waited for him to get off. Then I asked him in Spanish if I could just buy the ticket on the train using a credit card or cash. He said a credit card wouldn’t work, but I could pay for the ticket with cash. He said to just get on the train and wait in this one particular car and then once the train was moving, he came to see us to collect the cash and printed up the tickets on a mobile machine.

I don’t know if this works on all their trains, but it made the difference between leaving and not. Because the train after that was completely sold out. And if we’d had to wait two hours or more, it would’ve been a dealbreaker.

Incidentally, even though we were seated in some empty seats and he printed the tickets for us. A few minutes later, some other passengers came and evicted us because they had those seats reserved. The seats that had been allotted to us were actually several cars down the train. Just ready for that.

Hi Railrider,
Sorry about your frustrating experience with the National train company of Spain, Renfe. For me and many others— your story is one we know well.
Your experience with Renfe’s online platform that turned into a time-consuming exercise in futility— is a common experience for a lot of Americans. After spending more time than one should have to navigating Renfe’s wonky website to enter your passport number, name, address, credit card number and ticket options—only to have it all flushed because it rejects your credit card—-is beyond ridiculous.
And clearly the conductor you bought your ticket from had seen people in your predicament time and again. He’s probably seen his colleagues at the ticket counters with their malfunctioning computers prevent them from processing tickets efficiently.

The Spanish people also recognize Renfe has so much room for improvement.
As trains replace planes more and more in Spain’s modern age, let’s hope the glitches in the ticketing system of Renfe improve soon.

Because it needs to.

Enjoy Spain now that you have your train tix!

Hi Kenko, thank you for the information. I'm familiar with the Trainline, if one buys tickets for Spanish trains there will we bypass issues that RailRider had? Thanks

And sorry for your experience RailRider, it would really put me in a panic!!

Celeste, Yes- Renfe’s platform is the only one I know of that will not accept U.S. credit cards without any warning whatsoever. ( Norway’s train company at least warns customers in advance and advises them to use PayPal). When I buy my train tickets through The Trainline, U.S.credit cards have never been a problem.

Either it's the 3ds verification system, or cards that automatically block payments on foreign websites. The advantage of companies like Trainline is that they actually have a US site with easy access. Still trying to understand - I was trying to by tickets to a Barcelona FC match soon, site would not process Visa, MC, or Amex cards. Then my son used his identical Visa with no problem! Maybe call credit card company and see if card in doing any of that blocking....

I bought a dozen tickets on Renfe last night using US credit cards. It apparently depends on your credit Weather Visa will ask you to verify the transaction with a text or phone call. One of our friends was able to buy tickets with no verification at all.

I was also able to put in frequent travelers in their passport numbers to save permanently in the app so that every time I book another trip, I don’t have to re-entering all that stuff. This is quite unlike the Portuguese train system where every time you back up you gotta enter in everybody’s names and passport information fresh over and over again.

Also, Renfe provided the tickets immediately and I was able to add them to my Apple wallet. The Portuguese trains company sent PDF files that did not get uploaded to my wallet so now I’m going a lot more hassle to worry about that.
