My husband and I are planning to stay in Madrid for 5 nights mid May 2022. I am wondering which train station is most convenient for taking day trips to other towns. We would like to visit places north of Madrid, such as Segovia and Zaragoza. We will be driving up from the south, dropping our rental car off at the airport heading to our accommodation.and then using public transport while in Madrid. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!
Each destination is served from a specific station.
- Zaragoza is served from Atocha.
- Segovia is served from Chamartín. Fast trains to Salamanca also leave from Chamartín.
- Ávila is served from Príncipe Pío.
There is nothing of interest around Chamartín, so you are better off staying close to Atocha, near the Prado / Reina Sofia museums (walking distance to Atocha), or within walking distance from Puerta del Sol which has direct trains to both Chamartín and Atocha stations.
Just plan on staying in central Madrid. More to do and see, great restaurants, wonderful walking in the evening. The train stations are well connected by the Metro, with Puerto del Sol a good hub.
From the airport, the metro works as well, though look at buses, depending on where you are staying, they may be as handy.
