I have been trying to book tickets from Madrid to Toledo for a day trip on October 15 or 16. I am using Trainline (Renfe was impossible to figure out!). However, each time I put in the info it does not show any trains only busses. We are not adverse to taking a bus - it is only an hour ride - but just curious - it is because Renfe has not released tickets yet? We are also thinking about a day trip to Segovia from Madrid -on one of the days mentioned above and not sure if a bus will be our best bet from Madrid - or is there a train? Thanks for any advise or tips. Peggy J
RENFE is a creature unto itself when it comes to releasing tickets. I bought tickets back on July 5 for a Sept 24 train to and from Madrid and Toledo, so you should be able to get tickets fairly soon. There are like 15 trains a day serving this route.
Buses serving the Madrid-Toledo route leave from Plaza Elliptica while trains leave from Atocha, which is generally more convenient for most tourists.
Trains only appear when tickets go on sale, usually 60 days in advance - but not necessarily. And some trains may show up before others on the same day. Don't stress. Tickets do sell out, but only a few days in advance. The schedule pretty much the same from week to week. And prices are the same, whenever you buy. You should have no issues even if you wait till early October.
Thank you both so much for the info! The good news is we decided to spend 2 nights in Toledo rather than do a day trip from Madrid. We have Inyo tickets from Cordoba to Madrid- now just waiting for tickets to be posted from Madrid to Toledo so we can add to that trip. So excited for our visit!!
Thanks for this timely post! We are also traveling from Madrid to Toledo that week -- and haven't decided if we will travel by train or bus. Sounds like there will be plenty of options for either without a need to plan this far in advance. Much appreciated!
Yes- just love this forum/ so helpful!! Enjoy your trip!!
Great choice. Toledo is worthy of the time. Have a great trip!!
Yes - we are excited - thanks to all for your thoughtful comments and advice!
For Segovia, there are two kinds of trains:
- Slow train from Principe Pio to Segovia central station (1:45 hours)
- fast train from Chamartin to Segovia Guiomar high-speed station (30 min), from where there are buses to the city center
I would definitely take the fast train to Segovia, but on the way back, there is a slow train at 8:45 PM if you want to maximize your time in Segovia and not worry about heading back to the high-speed station.
Thank you so much! Will have to see if we end up with time for Segovia - just so many amazing places to visit!
