I’m loosing it! I have noted in both Rick Steves book and on line that there are as many as 6 trains a day, yet I think I have tried every site and avenue possible without options. I’m wanting April 4 th and I can only get April 3 or nothing at all. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong? I’m exhusted

RENFE is know for opening bookings for trains often only weeks in advance. April 4th is just to far in the future. Try again in a month or so.
Train travel is mass transit. There is no need to worry that much about trains so far in advance.

The problem with Renfe is there are no direct trains that run from Madrid to San Sebastian. I suggest taking a direct bus instead.

I do not think there are 6 trains a day between Madrid and Donostia-San Sebastian, it does not make much sense...I´d believe there´s one each way, daily. Bus is a great option, frequently overlooked by visitors, but very much used by locals.

I see 3 trains a day now, taking a bit less than 5 hours. A bit better than it used to be until about a year ago, now that the high speed line reaches Burgos.
Buses would take about 6 hours I guess, perhaps a bit longer even.
