Train from Madrid to Avila

We are looking at taking a train from Madrid to Avila for a day trip. Question: Can we wait until we arrive in Spain (Barcelona) 3 days in advance to purchase tickets or should we attempt to do it on-line now? We are looking at the first part of May.
Thank you
Anne

No need to buy tickets in advance: they are fixed price (EUR 9,25 or 12,70 single journey, depending on the type of train) and have non-reserved seats. Trains leave from Chamartin station.
