Does anyone have an update on last year's train connection being interrupted and requiring a bus for part of the trip? I have checked the Renfe site and got no info on this in English. Also, the train tickets are not (yet) available on-line for my date in May. And, would it be so bad to take the bus instead of the train?
Karen,
According to the Renfe site, the railroad renovations are still in progress ( since April 2015)
This means that presently, there is a Bus-AVE combination from Granada to Sevilla & vice-versa.
So, you will travel by bus from Granada => Antequera Santa Ana, upon where you will transfer to an AVE train =>Sevilla
(or vice-versa)
We visited Andalucía in October (2015) & we chose to travel by bus (ALSA) because I didn't want the hassle of transferring from train to bus, etc...
We purchased our bus tickets at the bus station, (when we were in Córdoba), then traveled to Granada (2 hours travel time).
We also traveled by bus from Granada => Sevilla (travel time 3 hours).
The ALSA buses are very comfortable & they have A/C.
Here is ALSA's website to check schedules: https://www.alsa.es/en
Make sure you book your tickets for the Alhambra in advance :-)
There is no news on completion.
'would it be so bad to take the bus instead of the train?' By all means take the ALSA bus. The journey time is much the same and you may bag an extra cheap fare. The disadvantage of the bus is you take it from the bus station on the edge of Granada and, depending where you stay, requires a one or two bus ride or a taxi whereas the train station is nearer the centre.
Karen,
I just re-read the "Avisos" ( News/Notices) on the Renfe website & I found this train schedule, which shows that there are only 4 trains per day traveling to/from Granada to Sevilla: http://tinyurl.com/Granada-Sevilla-timetables
I'd suggest taking the ALSA Bus ;-)
Thanks everyone for the info. I too will take the bus to avoid the hassle of switching. Glad to hear it has AC. Also, will taxi to the bus station outside Granada. I have already seen a super cheap fare for the bus trip. Guess I should grab it before it disappears.
Karen,
The bus ride was very pleasant... I enjoyed the scenery of rolling hills covered with olive trees & some "white towns" in the distance.
When you arrive at the bus station in Granada, make sure you check the arrival/departure digital board to verify the bus "track",
as it may differ from what is printed on your ticket.
If you need assistance, you can ask at the ticket counter.
People start lining up by the bus track 20-30 minutes before departure time, & once the bus arrives, you will place your luggage in the compartment below before boarding the bus.
Have a wonderful trip!
Note that there are two 'standards' of coach run by ALSA on this route - economy and supra-economy. The latter gives a bit more room with 2+1 seating, free WIFI, bottle of water +TV. This costs around €30. Economy starts from €5 up to around €20.
Thank you for the extra info.
But now I find I cannot make the on-line Alsa bus ticket purchase work. I plugged in my passport number and chose PayPal , but nothing happens. Do I have to wait until I arrive in Spain to buy the tickets?
Karen,
Don't worry about buying bus tickets ahead of time. I made the exact trip on a Saturday and there were plenty of tickets available.
Just use the restroom before you get on the bus. No toilets for 3 hours.
Karen,
I purchase our bus tickets at the bus station in Córdoba, but you can easily buy them when you arrive to Granada.
What other cities will you be visiting in Spain?
We paid €29, 38 pp for our 'Supra Economy' tickets, Granada >>Sevilla & our bus did have a toilet.
All the bus passengers also received a paper sack containing a bottle of water & a small cake snack.
Enjoy your trip!
Did the bus/train from Granada to Sevilla a couple of weeks ago. It took a lot longer than it should have but there was no way around it. I believe the tickets online open up about 3 weeks in advance, no matter how you try to book it. There was an English option but it was not detailed enough to warn me of the bus / train.
Looking to buy either the train or bus from Seville to Granada in September, it looks like the warning no longer applies to trains after Aug 7th, 2016.
up to Aug 7th there is the Renfe warning: "Travelers whose trip goes through the stretch Antequera Santa Ana, Antequera City, Loja and Granada undertake this road section (bus)."
Anyone know whether you can put much stock into the absence of the warning?
Hoping that the full journey via train (not train/bus) will be running again.
