Train from Girona to Barcelona Airport

I am trying to figure out how to get from Girona to Barcelona Airport. It seems that trains do not go direct, and it even seems difficult to locate a schedule that includes origin and destination with a change of trains. Looks like we can get from Girona to Barcelona Sants; is that the main train station? If so, what is the best way to get from Barcelona Sants to the airport? I'm starting to wonder if a car service from Girona would be the most efficient option (although significantly more money). Thank you.

Barcelona Sants is the main station and there are AVE express trains from Girona. Sants to the airport is a suburban commuter train, the R2. It goes every 30 minutes and takes 17 minutes. A ticket is 4.10 EUR.

Well, I’m not really seeing the difficulty in finding the schedules… if you look in the right place 😉

I use this trip planner, efficiently run by the Government of Catalonia: https://mou-te.gencat.cat/itinerary, or go straight to the transport sites: https://www.renfe.es (high-speed train), https://rodalies.gencat.cat (regular train), or the websites of the different bus companies: Barcelona Bus or SARFA.

Anyway, long story short: from Girona you can get to Barcelona Sants by regular train, high-speed train, or bus (recommendation: high-speed). Estació de Sants in Barcelona is indeed one of the main hubs, so from there you just switch to whatever suits you best, train, metro, or bus, to reach El Prat airport, all of them available at the same station. For me, metro is best.

And just as a heads-up for anyone not used to public transport in their home country: here it’s cheap, simple to use, clean, and safe.

Efficient? Well… depends on which company. If it’s RENFE Rodalies (=regular train), maybe bring a bit of patience 😄 (actually, avoid for now, yeah… there’s just too much work going on right now. Parts of the line to Girona are cut, so you end up doing bus transfers, and those buses are absolutely packed, and often delays occur… not exactly a smooth ride)
